In the drive to energy optimization and improving overall sustainability of a project, many different priorities must be balanced. Product selection must include a review of material transparency and presence of any chemicals of concern, the material's embodied carbon, impact on operational carbon, and the capability to be recycled or reused. This is then balanced with overall system durability to ensure the project will last and perform as intended. All of these decisions can be overwhelming. Through the use of two case studies of projects with high sustainability goals: Goodwill of the Great Plains Headquarters in Sioux City IA and a large commercial building in Boston, MA this presentation will highlight ways to design high-performance roof assemblies.
We will review project goals and the design choices made to meet the sustainability goals. This will include the impact of material selection on Material Pledge Impact Categories and Carbon Leadership Forum Design Strategies. Specifically, we will share data on how the choice of materials can impact the total carbon footprint of a project, and the embodied carbon, respectively. The presentation will also show examples of ways to improve the energy efficiency of a roof assembly and the impact it has on overall building performance across all climate zones. Throughout the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to provide revision recommendations to improve the roof assembly to meet sustainability goals such as increased recyclability, improved durability and minimized chemicals of concern.
