  • 1.  Catina AIA contract software problems - heads-up

    Posted 12-18-2024 04:05 PM

I've found two significant issues with the new AIA contracts managed by Catina. I received an invitation to the software on Dec. 12.

    1. Project folders are not supported in the software. Your finalized PDF documents that were imported by Catina come in a long list but not separated by project folders. For instance, all the A101 documents come in as individual files with the same name. This makes finding a particular document difficult.
    2. Previous draft documents prepared from the old software cannot be imported to the Catina website. We have created a series of draft documents that now cannot be modified or finalized.

We have 90 days access to the old software. I hope the the software evolves over that time, but it seems the rollout is premature.

    After looking at this further:

    1. New project folders created in Catina are supported. Old project folders are not imported.
    2. I'm attempting to save our old draft documents as templates in the old software and then import those templates to Catina. My Catina webpage doesn't include the Migrate Templates button that they instructed me to use. Hopefully, that will show up soon.

    Hi Steve,

I have experienced that which you described, going from on-premise software to the Cloud is not a one-to-one translation (at least not for me). Meaning. It was easier to just recreate the data in the cloud and shelf the on-premise data to the IT department for archiving. Most cloud migrations are buggy. Without getting into software rights, do you have the Catina support email address? Maybe they have a way to lift-and-shift your documents into what they have built. Just a thought. Most cloud developments have more features coming forth than what on-premise would or will offer. Meaning the ship may have sailed for on-premise A101 document management. Also, one question I had for you was , do the file(s) have timestamps that are different as you mention the files all have the same name?

Thanks for posting your learning curve with Catina for other Architects like myself to get the skinny on.

    Updates:

    1. The day after I uploaded our draft documents to the old ACD5 site as templates, the option to migrate them appeared on the Catina site. So, I was able to transfer my old files to Catina.
    2. On the migrated documents tab, there is now a column that shows the old project folder from ACD5.

Catina has several issues that remain unresolved like creating templates that save data for repeat projects from the same client, saving and inserting clauses and using ACD5 files in Catina.  I've been moderately satisfied with Catina.

To say that Catina was released prematurely is a monumental undertaking.

Not only are some essential functions not yet available, but also, the software is incredibly buggy.

In addition, although, at first, it appeared that included in the Basic Subscription were all the most commonly used forms, it turns out that there is at least one major exception: The Construction Contract (A101).

I think it is an outrage that the AIA allowed this software to be released when it was released and expect its users to put up with all of the problems associated with its incomplete and incompetent implementation.

In my prior post, in the first line, the last word should be "understatement".

    Hi Eliot,

I really like the editing you have supplied here. One thing I noticed is that you use the word under...

to bring some opposite comment. My last three weeks I have used the word over... in much of my writing.

overtime, overwhelmed, overseas, overload, override... etc.

    chuckles for the over-under monologue,
