I am seeking examples of career path development plans. As a small business, we do not have an HR department to formalize such an in-house program. I would like avoid the pitfalls and learn how successful programs evaluate, mentor and reward staff as they grow professionally as well as learn what does not work.

The AIA has a number of best practices that cover human resources.  The topic areas cover Managing People, Recruiting and HiringStaff Development, and Terminations, Layoffs, and Performance Issues.  This resource can be found at http://www.aia.org/practicing/bestpractices/AIAS076997.  Additionally, I believe the documents are included in the "The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice".

I would also suggest cross-referencing NCARB's Intern Development Program - especially if you're looking to build a mentoring program. The master and apprentice model doesn't exactly exist today and the four generations in the work place have different motivations and goals, IDP and AIA are working to address this, but they need our help bringing it into the office environment.

    Hi Kurt,

I agree with what you've said.  I was glad to see you mention the fact that we now have 4 different generations in the workforce and each type has different goals.  You mentioned that the AIA and IDP are working to address this, but need our help in bringing it into the work place.

Do you know of any resources by the AIA or IDP that you can provide a link to which addresses the above?

    Thanks,
    Tara

    Tara and Kurt ...

Just to add to the discussion (first time I have done so), I would also recommend the following AIA link which addresses some of the generational issues and resources/groups to tap from.  As a State IDP Coordinator and former Chair of the Young Architects Forum (YAF), I think you will find some pertinent material through this link.  Good luck!
