Yes, providing the general contractor and subcontractors with electronic information is necessary and beneficial for all parties involved. Providing electronic details of the project however should not be included in any electronic file sharing. It is the duty of the contractor and subcontractors to interpret the architectural and engineering drawings and prepare shop drawings describing their own interpretation of the components involved for installation and coordination purposes. Too often lately shop drawings are being submitted that either are the exact same details shown in the architectural drawings or do not represent adjacent components for the project. The crucial coordination and installation steps are not being represented in the process. My recommendation is to provide 2D plans, 2D elevations, and/or the basic REVIT model only.
