I regularly see mechanical consultants using the hatch over items--ducts, equipment, etc--to be removed, but I've never seen an architect's standards use anything but a dashed line to represent items to be removed. Demolition keyed notes are good for clarifying too.

My experience from hand drafting through BIM is typically the dashed line is used for items, and the dashed hatch is used for areas. For example renovation of a bathroom, you could hatch the entire area to indicate all flooring, walls, fixtures, and associated items. Do not discount the added QC of Notes, both General and Itemized, to insure the demolition is clear expecially anything to be salvaged or replaced.
