My point, seemingly missed among all the wailing and rending of cloth, is that the question on the table was "Why Does Design Matter" rather than an invitation to lamentation over
"Why don't architects matter more to those who provide our fees?". I admitted up-front that the initial question is academic, meaning that it may mean nothing, or means only what we (professionals) say it means. As, I believe, Sir Alfred North Whitehead famously quipped, with regard to epistemology, paraphrasing: "...What does one mean by "mean"?"
What do I mean? I mean that neither design that matters nor wealth are likely to accrue to self-pity - especially when seasoned with self-righteousness.
