Job Titles

We have several folks with 5-7 years experience who are not yet licensed. They are, however, starting to get responsibility for small projects. We are searching for an appropriate title to distinguish them from recent graduates. Is anyone using an appropriate title (without the word architect)?

We are in a similar situation and are now using the titles Job Captain and Design Coordinator for various staff members who are not yet licensed. But I'm also interested to know what titles are being used by other firms...

I always liked the term 'Project Coordinator' ... It avoids the term 'intern' which for someone with 5-7 yrs experience seems inappropriate. It also fits nicely into Project Manager, Project Architect ... Title structure.

In SD, we can't use Architect either . . . or is that an AIA thing? I can't recall . . . but we expended some serious energy and all we came up with was, "Project Manager".  Been using it for about 7-8 years now.  Clients don't appear to know or care as long as competent people are working on their projects.

I prefer to use terms that acknowledge and show respect for trained professionals.  If they are not licensed, they are technically intern architects.  Part of the terminology depends on the size of the firm and the size of projects.  I suggest the following:

    Architectural Designer I (Intern Architect)
    Architectural Designer II (Intern Architect)
    Architectural Designer III (Intern Architect)
Project Architect (Licensed or experienced intern architect working under the direction a licensed architect, leading the technical and design work on a few smaller projects)
Senior Project Architect (Licensed Architect leading the technical and design work on multiple projects)
Senior Designer (Licensed or Experienced Architect leading the design direction for the firm)

    Larger firms may use

Technical coordinator (project architect coordinating the technical aspects of a project)
    Senior Technical Coordinator
    Project Designer
    Senior Designer
    Design Director

It is our professional obligation that architectural projects be under the direction of a licensed architect, but we should also acknowledge the contributions made by unlicensed professionals.

In a time where we are losing a whole generation of architects and have seen loss in the number of individuals seeking licensure in, we should acknowledge the respect that trained professionals provide.  The staff may not be licensed architects in the legal sense of the word, but they are trained architects and I have worked with some exceptional and experienced professionals that epitamize everything an architect should be that were not licensed.  They work under licensed architects and provide great assistance.
