As a little history on the intern nomenclature let me say this: When I was on the AIA National Board of Directors, we lobbied hard to allow intern architects to complete the "three e's" in any order they wished. So while in the past Education was typically followed by Experience (internship) and finally Examination (the ARE) the candidate may now accomplish these tasks in any order. Until all e's are accomplished the intern is not yet entitled to use the title "architect."
At the request of young architects, students and interns, we also fought hard nationally and locally here in Illinois to obtain the legal title "intern architect" for those in the 3 e pipeline.
