This presentation attempts to identify the key trends that influence hospital planning today and to follow their origins back over the past century of hospital evolution. It is informative to find the origins and history of many of today’s key planning concepts. These ideas include operational efficiency, future flexibility, infection control, patient safety, patient focused care and healthy environments. All of these ideas can be traced by examples throughout the work of hospital architects since the early planning ideas of Florence Nightingale. There is much to learn from this history. We may find workable ideas from the past. We may also avoid repeating some mistakes.

Learning objectives
After participating in this webinar attendees will be equipped to:

1. Understand the origins of many of today’s most important trends in hospital planning. Ideas such as Lean Planning, Infection Control Strategies, Patient Focused Care and other ideas that seem like new ideas have a long history in the medical planning of the last century. 2. Understand how the major trends have helped hospital facilities evolve over the years. 3.Understand why some of these trends gain traction and then seem to lose favor among planners, only to come back again as a “new idea.” 4. Try to judge where these trends are working today and predict how they may influence the next decade of hospital planning.
