  • 1.  Field Study - Building for People

The way we develop our cities in the US often falls short, leading to places that prioritize cars over people and lack the quality of life found in many cities around the world.

To address this, I'm organizing a field study in June 2025 to Munich and Vienna, the author of 'Building for People,' Michael Eliason, AIA, along with other experts seeking to educate policymakers on best practices for building successful, sustainable communities. This study will focus on:

    • Sustainable Urban Development: Exploring successful examples of eco-districts and neighborhoods that prioritize sustainability, inclusivity, and resilience.
    • Cutting-Edge Practices: Examining passivhaus buildings, mass timber construction, climate adaptation strategies, and innovative approaches to housing and urban planning.
    • Building a Better Future: Learning from global best practices to inform and inspire a new generation of urban development in the US.

More information can be found on our website – Build for People Field Study.

We are seeking organizations to support this important initiative. The program will introduce participants to the experts behind Munich and Vienna's thriving urban centers where leaders have prioritized the principals of sustainable urban development, inclusivity, and resilience - achieving successful outcomes for resident health and well-being. Each day will include presentations and site excursions so we are looking for US politicians, planners, developers, and organizations who want to build a better world - one where public health and climate adaptation are prioritized. We are also looking for organizations to partner with to support this trip, which we aim to make an annual event.

If you would be interested in learning more, or have ideas about connecting us with organizations focused on these topics, please feel free to reach out.

I hope all goes well with your study. I love Danish architect Jan Gehl's urban work and his book "Life Between Buildings" - his studies and observations in various cities during the 1970's. In 2010, he wrote another book - "Cities for People" - that elaborated on his ideas and experiences. There is much to improve within our urban environments.
