  • 1.  FGI equivalent document for California.

Good afternoon and a Happy Friday to all!

I was trying to gather some data and documents for facility design in California at work. My first stop was FGI, but then realized California doesn't adopt FGI, this got me thinking about what the State of California uses as Guidelines for Healthcare Facilities.

    Thank you in advance!

The State of California utilizes their own health code known as OSHPD or Office of Statewide Healthcare Planning & Development. The codes are OSHPD 1, 2 and 3, I believe, with OSHPD 1 being for Hospitals and OSPHD 3 for Clinics. I would be sure to visit the HCAI or Department of Healthcare Access and Information website for more information. https://hcai.ca.gov/

    Best of luck!

California is far from alone in its adoption (or adaptation) of the FGI Guidelines per the illustration below.  And I'll note that as much as FGI strives to keep this material updated and correct, this is always a moving target, and even my home state of Ohio isn't shown truly correctly.  (It's never been formally adopted in Ohio, but, de facto, we use the most recent version used by CMS and TJC.)

More pointedly to your question, California, to my knowledge, develops its own document, which, in turn, uses the Guidelines as a basis.

For hospitals, its Section 1224 of the California Building Code.  You need to visit the OSHPD (now HCAi) website to get started.  If you have never worked in California before, you're going to need help/guidance.

    Stated respectfully.
I highly recommend that you talk to a licensed architect in the state of California. The state of California has the highest rigorous design and planning for healthcare construction in the country. That does not mean that it is better than other states —- it’s very X10 complicated.

Specifically…..you will need to be an expert in the following
    - CA Building Code; the state has their own building code.
    - Administrative Code Title 24 and associated chapters related to healthcare planning and design
    - all design, planning and construction documentation must be overseen by a licensed architect in the State of California.
    - know the process from the CA Dept. of Health Care Access and Information (formerly known as OSHPD).

    Good luck
