The 15th Annual South Atlantic Region Architecture + Health Chautauqua is aligned with the Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH), a knowledge community of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Our goal is to bring national caliber content to regional practitioners unable to attend the larger national conferences. This unique one-day conference historically attracts between 80-120 healthcare architects, engineers, designers, health system representatives, and select material suppliers to engage in dialogue about the latest, relevant trends in the healthcare design industry. The inspiration for this smaller scale more intimate event stems from the idea of a Chautauqua.

The conference is on Friday August 22, 2025 at Clemson University's Madden Center. The theme this year is focused on the application of innovative building systems in healthcare facility planning, design and construction. The conference will explore various building systems and methods including mass timber structural systems, prefabricated and modular construction, low carbon MEP systems, and the design of other innovative building systems and methods. These systems will be explored for how they can contribute to better and healthier environments for patients and staff, reducing their carbon footprint, and how these systems potentially impact both initial capital and life cycle costs. The 2025 conference will begin with a welcome reception and building tour at the Timberlab Factory in Greenville on Thursday August 21. Conference sessions on Friday August 22 include:

    • Mass Timber Hospital-The Future of Healthcare - David Staczek, ZGF Architects
    • Rural & Resilient – A Bold, Energy-efficient Rural Hospital Maximizes ROI and Strengthens a Community Legacy - Mickey Leroy, GBBN; Amy Mees, GBBN; Douglas Hundley, CMTA; Jim Lupidi, DANIS
    • MEP Systems for all Electric Healthcare Facilities - Chris Talbert, WSP
    • Building Envelope Design for Healthcare - Maurya McClintock, McClintock Façade Consulting
    • Bringing it All Together - Moderated Speakers Panel
