  • 1.  Fencing in a Coastal V-Zone

    Posted 08-14-2013 09:35 AM

I am interested in a system or even a standard design for a fence that would comply with the FEMA guidelines as a "breakaway" component that is non-supportive.  A couple approaches including those out of the FEMA technical bulletin 5 and coastal construction manual are chain link fences that have to be specified to have reduced ties and posts are not embedded in concrete.  Others which would be more aesthetically interesting are wood slats and louvered slats.  My interest is to not have to design a system, rather spec an off the shelf system and was interested to see if there is any experience with or references that may be provided.  The primary parameters I'm seeing are systems that are not attached to the structure or non-supporting, collapse under flood water with wave action, and the components are tethered or cabled to prevent offsite  floatation and debris blockage on adjacent environments/properties. Amongst the approaches listed above, it has been challenging to locate a system that incorporates the parameters I am trying to address.

Thanks in advance for any help, Steve
