The issue seems to revolve around more than just devices and tools; cutting across disciplines and professions. For architects, it seems to get to attitude and inertia and argues for our looking at how we relate to the world in much broader terms than ever before. This morning a guest posting that I wrote a couple of months ago was posted on Randy Deutsch's BIM + Integrated Design. It is germane to this discussion...check it out at: http://bimandintegrateddesign.com/2011/02/28/are-we-becoming-more-integrated-and-engaged/

I believe you nailed the issue on becoming integrated with two thoughts: ego and involved in our own niche. We view integration as our ability to make our product better.

My own frustration is with designers who see the wool on the sheep as a means to their own ends of shearing the wool and making uniques cardigan sweaters with intricate designs and patterns. At some point in time we must see beyond the wool and see the sheep producing the wool and begin to concern ourselves about the welfare of the sheep.

It is unfortunate that they are stinky, simple, brute beasts, and most important living creatures. Integrating with the needs of the living is far more difficult than working with the principles of design and construction and creating something unique out of materials.
