Last night I had the pleasure of participating in the COTEdc Summer Solstice Roundtable & Celebration. The theme of the discussion was "How far have we come? How far do we have to go?" and our metric-based perspectives on the state of sustainability in the building industry. AIA DC and COTEdc did a fantastic job with the event and I enjoyed having the opportunity to hear from local firms about their (predominantly positive!) experience with the AIA 2030 Commitment.
One of the questions pointed in my direction was along the lines of, "Participation in the AIA 2030 Commitment is rapidly increasing and key metrics -- including the number of firms reporting and the collection of operational energy data -- are improving. However, a relatively small percentage of projects are meeting the reduction targets. What needs to happen to lift that percentage?"
I lobbed the question back out to members of the audience, many of whom are practitioners working admirably to implement the 2030 Commitment in their firms. Their comments were insightful and led to an interesting discussion -- one I wish could have lasted a bit longer.
What do you think?
What needs to happen to lift that percentage? -------------------------------------------
