I was born in the Midwest and I have spent time in native regions of the Northwest, Southwest, Southeast, Northeast, and big parts of Canada.  I have never seen what I thought were "ugly" native species or habitats. Each place is unique in its beauty.  On the other hand,  I have seen ridiculous plants in the wrong places that require a lot of water to maintain.

Recently, in a green effort, our local library planted native plants in the beds around the building.  By choosing them well, they have enhanced the appearance of the building's grounds, reduced the watering requirements significantly and provided a palette of colors that changes with each season.  As with the design of a building, the choices made determine whether the result is attractive or ugly.
