I'm sure everyone has thoughts of warm summer afternoons, picnics, fishing, and lounging by the pool in their mind right now.
As 2011 Chair of AIA Codes and Standards I want to post this notice, and encourage anyone who is escaping the heat and reading this forum to consider applying for the AIA Code Hearings Committees that are currently posted on the ICC website...
http://www.iccsafe.org/cc/Pages/default.aspx My experience in being involved in the development of the IGCC from the start and sitting on the development and hearing committees is this:
1. Without architects on the committees;
A Language is created / adopted that may make our practice more difficult and less reality based;
B Special interest groups that have their own specific agenda work to advocate for that agenda and an
architect's perspective appropriately tempers a number special interest agendas;
C The language that may be adopted does not benefit from the broad based perspective multi-disciplined
architect practitioners bring to the table.
2. Language in the codes needs our eyes to review for risk management issues to assure a well intentioned
adoption of language does not expose our profession to greater risk than is necessary.
3. Our (architects) ability to coordinate all facets of an archtitectural project is critical to counter myopic
perspectives from proponents of code language provides a necessary broad perspective to the code.
Is being on a committee hard work? Yes
Is being on a committee a time committment? Yes
Is being on a committee worth it? Yes
If you have ever considered getting involved in the process, please do so. We at AIA and your fellow colleagues, need your involvement to assure practical, common sense perspectives from architects continue to be heard in the development and review of the codes.
The deadline is fast approaching...August 1 to be exact.
As one who, for years thought I would never get involved, considered it boring, or as some would describe it "watching sausage being made"...I have found that we (AIA Architect's) are trusted advisors in the process, and our opinions are sought and we make a significant difference when we get involved.
Please consider being a positive force for future good sense and a balanced approach in code development and consider getting involved by applying for a committee. You will make a difference.
And if you are considering it, email me, or Jessyca Henderson or Mark Wills at AIA an email letting them know of your interest. We will be glad to share our perspective and to encourage.
Have a great weekend.
