I would love to find a forward thinking, creative mechanical engineer who is comfortable with residential projects and off the grid projects.  Does anyone have a recommendation?

Good question Polly. I was looking for someone to help with our low-energy home designs and found David Butler of Optimal Building Systems after I read an article that he wrote in Home Energy called The Elephant in the Room.  While he is not a Mechanical Engineer, he has helped many of our clients throughout the US in recommendations for mechanical systems including PV. He is more accurately described as a building systems engineer - a combination of building science and mechanical engineering. His web site is:

He is located in AZ, but has lived in the east and works with our residential clients in various locations.

I suggest Monterey Energy Group in Pacific Grove, CA. They specialize in residential and are very focused on sustainability, net zero design and system integration. The principal is David Knight. ------------------------------------------- James Zack AIA Architect / Principal Zack/de Vito Architecture + Construction San Francisco CA -------------------------------------------

Yes, MEG is great.  I've worked with them for 25 years, but I should have mentioned I was looking for someone local to the Los Angeles area.
