  • 1.  does anyone have a copy of a section of the LABC?

    Hi there,
I have a small firm here in Southern California and do work in Los Angeles as well a many other communities up and down the coast.  A recent job has required me to submit area calculations based on a definition of said calculations in section 502.1 of the LABC.  I just purchased, for $200, a copy of the Los Angeles residential code  (LARC) last month...another $300 for the LABC for just the definition of section 502.1 is a bit too steep for us...hate to say it, but cash flow is really that tight right now.  Seems to me that the code should be publicly available in any case, but it is not available anywhere online except for purchase.  Seeing as how I live in Thousand Oaks (minimum 45 minutes from LA) it's hard to think of making a half day trip for section 502.1, but will do if need be, just looking to see if there's another way.  Does anyone have a copy of that section or a link to a PDF?

    Thanks so much,
    Dulcie Horwitz A.I.A.

This section was not amended from the standard 2010 CBC. I have attached a document from the LADBS website that includes the minor amendments.

    Dulcie,
If its a rehash of the IRC, you can find Virginia's version of it here http://www.ecodes.biz/ecodes_support/Free_Resources/Virginia2009/09Residential/09Residential_main.html

My hunch is that it standard BOCA / IBC language for building area. So the building area under discussioUn is the area within the surrounding exterior walls less vent shafts and courts. This is used to determine your fire area which is different than zoning area. The building area drives the areas used in height and area limitation tables. If you have an larger second floor that overhangs the ground , think Villa Savoie, than the overhanging area needs to be accounted for. This building are will determine minimum areas used for table 503 ------------------------------------------- David DeFilippo AIA Tsoi/Kobus Associates; Cambridge, MA Milton MA -------------------------------------------

    Government Publications

Works of the United States Government and various other governments are excluded from copyright law and may therefore be considered to be in the public domain in their respective countries.  In the United States, when copyrighted material is enacted into the law, it enters the public domain. Thus, the building codes, when enacted, are in the public domain. They may also be in the public domain in other countries as well. "It is axiomatic that material in the public domain is not protected by copyright, even when incorporated into a copyrighted work."

Visit the website: http://www.archive.org/details/gov.ca.la.building.code.vol1  You can find Volume 2 here too if you are only looking for a scecific section.  Of course, any updates are not guaranteed to be included here.
