In regard to the post from Larry Warner ( and probably many unsent posts ) ,the AIA will work with the members to either temporarily reduce or even suspend the dues for a time in recognition of the severe economic situation.
I think your concern re: the work of the association is an entire other discussion which is best addressed at your local chapter.

Last year I looked into suspension or reduction of dues. I was told I could apply for the privilege of being put on an installment payment plan--including interest. Thanks a lot, AIA.

I was also told I could apply to have my dues waived and, if my income was low enough, they would be. However, I didn't feel right accepting "charity" while also benefitting from membership. Out of a desire to "pay my own way", I made the sacrifice and wrote a check for the ridiculous dues amount. This year I might feel differently about that.

One reason I might feel differently is the increase in prices on AIA's standard contract documents. I think what I paid for contract documents more than "paid my way". Did we really need that price increase now when so many architects are out of work or barely hanging on?
