As a small project practitioner in a small firm (1 architect and 4 interns), I understand the economic pressures that come into play each year with subscriptions, memberships, and recurring expenses. Most of us question the cost-benefit offered by membership in the AIA. A convincing argument in favor of membership comes in a metaphor comparing benefits of AIA membership with a
health club membership. Without active exertion and participation using the resources offered, no meaningful or measurable results will become apparent. Inactivity, regardless of membership and dues, will not reap meaningful or desired benefits. The AIA is us. It is a volunteer organization fueled by the efforts of its active participants. Architects are a creative and resilient group of individuals. The AIA is a vehicle for us to interact, expand, and better the profession as well as ourselves.

Given this health club metaphor, a major consideration in your decision to renew should be your inclination for active involvement and participation. I would suggest that you try it out for at least one year and measure the effectiveness of these resources and if the shape that you find yourself in one year has been worth the cost of the subscription.
