You should look at Versacad from Archway Systems, Huntington Beach, CA.  We have been running it since 1987, when it was a prime competitor against Autocad, and it is excellent.  Was sold several times and nearly went under in the 90's then it was bought back and updated by the original developer, Archway.  For 2 D work it is much faster than Autocad (we run both) and much much easier to use.  Professional multiseat license is about $1000.  We translate back and forth all of the time, but always work in Versacad.  If you have a technical questions you can call them and speak to the original person that developed it!  I think you will be impressed, I have been for 25 years.

We have used Datacad for nearly 20 years.  Even with all our consultants using Autocad, it is still a better option.  The cost of a workstation is a fraction of the cost of Autocad, however, the most important difference is the reduced training time and subsequent efficiency.  The time required to train a new graduate is a quarter of the time to get them up to speed on Datacad, even when they have had some previous training on Autocad and none on Datacad.  The difference is so significant, you have to experience it to belive it.
