    While  you say that you "don't need a fire separation between floors," for a curch or any place of public assembly, I would be a strong advocate for a fire rated 5/8" gyp board ceiling. What one "needs" and what one should have may be two distinct animals. Too many fires start in Church or other basements! Safety first!

    That's a really low ceiling. Is the space used for assembly currently? If not, will you run afoul of the 7'-6" minimum code requirement? Hopefully, you are in a "grandfathered" situation.

    Hmmm...low ceiling...Scandanavian concept...how about some red cedar and a heater - instant Sunday School Sauna!
