    Dear Fellow Practitioners,

I'm working on a church basement renovation. We have exactly 7-feet 1-inch in ceiling height from the slab to the underside of the floor joists above. We don't need a fire separation between floors, and I'm looking for ideas as to how to treat the ceiling. It's a Lutheran Church, so the pastor wants something that reflects Scandinavian design.

Possible ideas include removing the existing pressed board (Homosote) ceiling, spraying the joists white or black, and proceeding from there.

I'm trying to figure out a way to economically install acoustical ceiling between the joists, but haven't come up with anything.

    Your ideas? Let me know....

Consider a spray-applied acoustical treatment such as International Cellulose Corporation's SonaSpray fc http://spray-on.com/products/sonaspray.html. This page notes an available DuraSpray version with higher abrasion resistance which I would suggest given the low ceiling. Product has Class A fire performance characteristics.

I would certainly take down the old ceiling to gain as much height as possible and paint a light color to get some light reflectance. Benjamin Moore's Sweet Bluette #813 is a great ceiling color. Is a porch ceiling color I use a lot down south and works well for small space ceilings. Or just use a much paler version of your wall color or a complementary color. I wouldn't go with plain white. May as well jazz it up a bit for an unusual space.

I have a project in a historic building where we had to provide a 2 hour floor/ceiling separation and the extra layers of GWB would have added to much load to the building.  I found a paint product that when married to certain assemblies will give you almost any rating.  This product can be tinted a number of colors or painted over.  Fire Free Coatings ( http://www.firefree.com/ ) is the product, if fire is a concern this may be a good product for you.  If fire protection is not a concern than I like your idea of exposing the structure and painting it or just a light stain.
