I second Stuart Brecher's recommendation of Archicad for residential work. Because it is 3D model based you can walk clients through the project, it is intuitive and easy to learn, but with great depth and power if you want to get into it. Best of all, you can start out with by purchasing an hourly key- so no big upfront cost.
