I have been using a program called "Chief Architect" for several years now. It is a less expensive alternative to Autocad/Revit and suits my Residential/ Light Commercial practice well. It draws the bldg model in 3 dimensions but also has very good construction drawing and rendering ability. Like anything there is a learning curve but I was able to do fairly complex models and Const Docs fairly quickly. It is a very viable option for small practitioners.
