  • 1.  two sole practioners as a joint venture?

I am currently working with an architect colleague on a project for renovating a series of conference rooms at a university.  We are both sole practitioners with no staff.  On this project, I am acting as a consultant to him under contract.
In the future we are looking to joint venture (but not create a brand new business)  work at other universities and colleges.  Our E & O insurance companies say that, as long as we do not hire staff, we do not need additional policy coverage.
We would market ourselves with a name such as "Architects Two" so as to appear as an entity and be totally upfront that we are a joint venture.

Does anyone have experience or knowledge of business complications with this approach?

    Thanks  much  Saxon

My former business partner and I had a similar arrangement for more than 13 years.  We were basically two sole practitioners working out of a shared office under a shared name.  It worked pretty well for us until I got tied up with responsibilities not related to work and we went our separate ways.
