Some of the Posts on this topic have made reference to importing CAD drawings into the FREE version of SketchUp by Google.

Although the professional version of SketchUp allows you to import CAD files, the FREE Google version of SketchUp (vsn 8.0 is what's currently available), does NOT allow you to import CAD files.
    Please, Help! What's the trick?

The Free trial version of Squiggle 6.0 allows for the import of CAD files but it doesn't work.
It's interesting that apparently you need to use vsn 5.0.

    Gail,

If you still have the free version of SketchUp 7 installed on your computer, the you can go to Google Sketchup, Downloads, Plugins, and find DWG/DXF import plugin for SketchUp 7.1  .  I have sketchup 6, 7 and 8 installed on my computer for different reasons, but use 7 mainly to import cad files.  Google hasn't released this plugin for 8 as they probably want you to purchase the pro version.  Here is their description from their site.  Hope this helps.

DWG/DXF import plugin for SketchUp 7.1 (Free)
    Last updated: September 2009
The DWG/DXF importer isn't available in Google SketchUp 7.1, however it is offered in Google SketchUp Pro. You can download this optional plugin for Windows or Mac that enables the DWG/DXF importer. This plugin will only be available for a limited time, and it will not be supported in our next major release. This plugin was created by Google. Visit this Help Center article to learn more.

There are older "test" versions of "Pro" w/ time limit (8hrs.).
If you use it mostly for .dwg translation to .skp, it will last you for a long time... .
But SketchUp is so usefull - that it's a good idea to keep at least one "Pro" per office.

    Hooray for John Stewart!
We do the same - hand sketches of all types, especially perspectives - are SO much faster and... uh... they look like hand sketches

Boo-Hiss for all those architectural programs that don't make sure all of you learn how to actually draw.
