I became a Schluter convert about 15 years ago, and when my favorite 75 year old Italian-American tile setter made the change about 7 years ago, it signaled the end of conventional tile anchorages and waterproofing. Prior to that, mud-set was the only way to go for permanence, or maybe an adhesive system in a non-moisture environment. In a multi-family project where maintenance could be low priority, go for the best system possible.

Subject: are Schluter systems really necessary?
Dear Fellow Members,
I'm working on a multi-family project and am considering specifying the new 3 mm porcelain tiles in the showers because there will be fewer joints in the system. Do you think a Schluter membrane would be necessary, or will a regular waterproof membrane be sufficient? Your input will be appreciated.
All the best,
