Celebrating the impact of over 30 years of AIA COTE and the AIA COTE Top Ten Award.
Lessons from the Leading Edge: 1997 - 2015. (AIA COTE, 2016)
Summary: As a whole, Top Ten winners demonstrate that advanced sustainable design practices can be applied to a wide range of projects of any scale, type, and budget. They are outpacing industry standards by virtually every measure and showing continual forward progress. The report concludes with recommendations to encourage more attention on key topics, including integrative design, regional diversity, the health impact of materials, adaptive reuse, post-occupancy evaluations, cost effectiveness, and indoor environmental quality in large, complex projects. Habits of High-Performance Firms: 1997 - 2016. Lessons from frequent winners of the AIA COTE Top Ten Award. (AIA COTE, 2017)
Summary: The annual AIA COTE Top Ten Awards, which AIA calls “the best known recognition program for sustainable design excellence,” launched in 1997. Of the 130 architecture firms that have won at least one award to date, only 29 have done so more than once, and only 17 have won three or more times. Closely studying these firms reveals a number of common traits and measures of excellence. The report summarizes findings from all firms with multiple Top Ten Awards and focuses on 10 chosen for closer study. All of these High-Performance Firms (HPFs) are leading the profession in virtually every way—not just in the number of Top Ten Awards. Download.
