Excitement abounds for the Academy's Next Generation (NextGen) Committee! I’ve had the good fortune to observe their genuine excitement of career growth in healthcare through the committee’s monthly gathering “Passion: Health Design” led by committee chair, Southern Ellis of HKS. The online meeting showcases diverse case studies that clearly provide leadership opportunities and exposure to some amazing projects. Most recently, NexGen committee member Graham Sinclair of HKS shared “The Piedmont Marcus Heart & Vascular Center," a new bed tower addition to Piedmont Atlanta Hospital with 807,305 sf of new construction and 45,583 sf of renovations. Developed in a prominent corner location with street level retail, Graham explained the design decision for the shape of the building and other interesting design features that make this project a huge success.
The NextGen group also participated at the ASHE PDC Summit in Nashville. A topic born from a lively discussion between committee members earlier in 2018 on “What defines success for this generation in our profession?” evolved into an AIA/AAH Emerging Professionals Forum presentation at PDC. A collaboration between NextGen committee chair Southern Ellis and Tushar Gupta, Principal at EYP and President Elect for the AAH, included an audience poll on how we all define success regardless of generation.
The Committee continually encourages education among its members. Other recent opportunities included participation in “A Guidelines Webinar for Young Professionals: presented by the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health and FGI,” which provided key body of knowledge to help our young professionals’ succeed in healthcare design.

During the fall, NextGen members worked to magnify the voice of the next generation of leaders while serving on several ancillary AAH committees such as communications, U40 List, and conference planning. Their representation and eager spirit continues to infuse a different perspective into the AAH and its many entities. I look forward to witnessing continued success among our young professionals in healthcare design, particularly the evolving crossover of knowledge and experience between generations. Many great things are happening for our NextGens!
Sincerely,
Eileen D. Trimbach, AIA, LEED AP BD&C, EDAC

The Next Generation Committee is the front door for young architects, researchers, and architecture students entering the Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH). The committee seeks to introduce young people to the field of health design, relay its impact, and then serve as the gathering ground for this community to grow, empowering its members to become the future leaders in the field. This gathering ground will also serve as a well of youth for the various committees within the AAH to draw from, increasing generational diversity throughout the Academy. If you want to get involved with the committee, please contact aah@aia.org.
