Incorporating Womens Detention Facilities into the Community

07-26-2011 11:33 AM

A panel of architects and planners will demonstrate how women's facilities can be incorporated into the community fabric through programs and physical design. The 1,200-bed San Diego pretrial women's facility is located in a developing community and will play a significant role in establishing a "restorative" connection with the community. The 800-bed pretrial women's facility for Baltimore is an important feature in the revitalization of this sector of the City that includes the Johns Hopkins Medical Complex. Both projects focus on the creation of "neighborhoods" with a campus and urban, high-rise setting. (Corrections/Detentions Session (CD-1) presented at the AAJ Conference November 18, 2010.) Speakers Stephen Carter, AICP, Founder/Managing Principal, Carter Goble Lee (moderator) Dave Bezansen Asst. Secretary for Capital Programs, Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Ron Budzinski, FAIA Senior Principal, PSA-Dewberry Jody Mays, AICP Planner/Project Manager, San Diego Sheriff's Dept.
