2025 CRAN Symposium Digest

Enclosed is a comprehensive digest of the 2025 CRAN® Symposium presentations. The Symposium had a dynamic set of 11 educational sessions with 13 speakers covering nine topics. The digest is divided into evolving narratives, key themes and trends, opportunities and challenges, strategic recommendations, and closes with relevant AIA resources. Augmenting the digest are four speaker presentations. As more speakers approve sharing of their presentations their PDFs will be added to this post.

Janet Bloomberg, FAIA, partner and co-founder of KUBE architecture in Washington, DC, described the expansion of her family’s historic mid-century modern home. Located in Hammond Woods, a 1950’s neighborhood Charles Goodman developed in Kensington, MD, the original home was 1,000 sf, set on a sloped and wooded site. The challenge of adding to a historic property, while allowing each structure to have its own character, was discussed.

Deborah's presentation course aimed to assist fellow architects who are venturing into similar projects by equipping them with knowledge and awareness about crucial aspects to observe during construction, which they might not have been fully attuned to otherwise. Diving into the design of a Passive House project for the first time can be exciting, but also somewhat intimidating. Passive House is a growing trend in architecture, but many do not understand the practical implications. Without paying attention to key factors that are often overlooked in standard construction, the project is likely to fail to achieve Passive House Status.
