AIA HCD x COTE® - Affordable Housing AIA COTE Top Ten Awards
1 LU|HSW
The AIA COTE Top Ten Awards set the standard for sustainable design excellence. Often, the recognized group includes an affordable housing project. This collaborative AIA Housing and Community Development and AIA Committee on the Environment webinar brings together expertise in equitable housing and sustainable design to foster dialogue around the intersection of community impact and climate action. The panel highlights the last three affordable housing winners of the COTE Top Ten Award: Coliseum Place by David Baker Architects (2025),
Casa Adelante at 2060 Folsom
by Mithun (2023), and Pacific Landing by Patrick Tighe Architecture (2024). Panelists will discuss strategies for setting and achieving ambitious sustainability goals with clients, and how their projects advance climate performance and equity, despite operating within tight resource constraints.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to explain how various sustainability strategies are advanced with resident and community benefit and social equity considerations in mind.
Participants will be able to describe various innovative performance and people-centered design approaches to create housing that can act as a catalyst in stabilizing a neighborhood and elevating the human experience.
Participants will be able to describe the goals of the Equitable Communities principle of AIA Framework for Design Excellence, and explain how this principle can help guide priorities alongside the other nine principles of the Framework. Participants will be able to use examples of how sustainability strategy selections that enhance building performance and indoor environmental quality directly benefit people for social impact.
Participants will be able to explain innovative cost analysis strategies against performance and occupant benefit metrics to get the most value and environmental/social impact out of every decision.
