Environments for the diagnosis, treatment, and care of cancer and related diseases will be the focus of AIA Chicago’s Healthcare Knowledge Community in 2013. Six events, which are open to architects, hospital administrators, facility managers, and medical professionals, will provide participants with knowledge and insights from speakers including architects, oncologists, caregivers, and planners. The series includes presentations and opportunities to see recently-constructed facilities dedicated to cancer care.
The treatment of cancer incorporates many different technologies and platforms. This technology presents unique challenges in designing for the complexity of equipment, as well as the comfort, well-being and safety of patient and caregiver. This presentation will include an overview of planning principles and technical concerns for equipment and platforms such as linear accelerators, brachytherapy, proton therapy, and chemotherapy. It will also give an overview of processes used in determining appropriate shielding, and emerging technology in both shielding and treatment of cancer. Speakers: Amy Kerkman, AIA of Matthei & Colin Associates / Steven Johnston, PhD of Veritas Medical Solutions / Suraj Soudagar, MS, LEED AP of KJWW Engineering Consultants.
