Designing For Justice: Dignity, Community, Sustainability

We believe buildings speak and through their language tell a story of what is valued at a time and place. We wish to focus this year on people: those who work in these facilities, those who are served by them and those who view them and how what we have built sustains these principles, fulfills their needs and how we may continue to develop thoughtful responses to improve the human condition.

Dignity may be reflected in the stature of a building but it may or may not treat people with that quality. Community is about how people live and work in these buildings as well as how they are received as a contribution to the built environment. Sustainability refers not only to energy conservation through recycle and renewal, reduction of carbon footprint, and integrated, holistic planning, it also suggests our continued determination to achieve excellence. We are especially interested in how these goals are being satisfied at state level courts. Of particular interest may be what is happening in programming within the three justice tracks as they become in some instances more interdisciplinary.

This year's AAJ conference is being held concurrently with the Boston Society of Architect's (BSA) annual Build Boston Conference. The BSA is collaborating with the AAJ by providing conference planning services.
