Bio

Jacob Werner (AIA, LEED, WELL, CPHC) is an Associate Principal at Ellenzweig, an architectural design firm in Boston, MA.  He has devoted his career to designing intuitive environments for scientific discovery. Jacob’s current and recent clients include Stony Brook University, the University of Rhode Island, and New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University. Prior to joining Ellenzweig, Jacob completed projects for clients including Barnard College, Columbia University, Boston University, RMR Group, Trinity College Dublin, MITIMCO, Merck, Alexandria Real Estate, the University of Delaware, MIT, and the University of Massachusetts.

Jacob is passionate about design research and sustainability. He is a member of the AIA 2030 Commitment Working Group, the committee that oversees the 2030 program. Jacob has spoken extensively and authored numerous technical publications, about both laboratory design and sustainability.  His latest speaking includes the 18th annual CDC Biosafety Symposium and 2024 Tradeline University Science conferences. His latest research includes I2SL’s “Decarbonizing Laboratories: A Primer.”

Jacob teaches architectural design at the Boston Architectural College. Using work developed in Jacob's studios, his students have won several ACSA design competitions, including the 2024 AIA COTE Top Ten for Students design competition.

Outside the studio, you may find Jacob swimming, kayaking, or hiking his way through New England with his wife and three children.
