In the sprawling tapestry of architectural innovation, a void exists–a silence stretching across borders and cultures. Just as a structure is only as strong as its foundation, a society is only as robust as its inclusivity. Recognizing this profound truth, the Immigrant Architects' Coalition emerges, carving a niche in the design world with a vision that transcends boundaries and echoes the stories of those who have journeyed far and wide to build a better future.

The Immigrant Architects Coalition (IAC) is a C501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to empowering immigrant architects to realize their aspirations for a successful career in the United States. Acknowledged as a distinguished partner organization in the AIA Large Firm Roundtable's JEDI Advocacy Guide - Impact Guidelines, IAC is a community of dedicated individuals with a shared mission to create a substantial and lasting influence.

With the intent to Elevate, Engage, and Educate, our incentives are vessels of cultural storytelling, showcasing the myriad identities and talents that immigrants bring to the architectural realm. By illuminating these stories, we can reshape perceptions and foster appreciation for the diverse voices within our profession. Through publications, podcasts, curated lectures, and panel discussions, we engage with architects and the entire AEC. We recognize the importance of discourse, understanding, and connection in dismantling barriers. Our goal is to create an environment where every aspiring architect, regardless of origin, finds a platform to thrive.

In 2022, the IAC released its first book "City Shapers: Stories of Immigrant Designers." This book was the first step in achieving the IAC mission. Twenty-four immigrant professionals share their experiences as firm owners, industry leaders, and entrepreneurs. The stories in this book portray a typical path in their journey to achieve a successful and meaningful career in the U.S. We hope that other immigrant architects get inspired by these stories to follow their professional goals. The book is also a resource for connecting with these successful professionals in the US.

This year, the IAC published its second book, "Prospering in the U.S. - A Handbook for Immigrant Architects." This book is a comprehensive resource that provides essential insights and practical advice for immigrant architects in the United States. Covering topics from cultural acclimation to career development, it is a valuable tool for architects, educators, employers, and advocates, fostering success and inclusivity in the architectural profession.

The book results from collaboration with renowned architects, educators, and industry experts, ensuring diverse perspectives and comprehensive insights.

Three AIA Global Practice Committee members are co-authors in both books published by IAC: Yu-Ngok Lo, FAIA, Graciela Carrillo, AIA, and Li Ren, AIA.

Last year, the IAC launched a Podcast sharing immigrant architects and designers' unique experiences and perspectives. Topics that matter most to this dynamic community include career success, business ownership, immigration laws, and mentorship. The guest speakers come from diverse backgrounds and share their stories of overcoming challenges and achieving success in architecture and design. The podcast offers valuable insights, practical advice, and inspiring stories to help immigrants navigate their careers.
