As the Chair of the 2025 AIA National Associates Committee (NAC), it's an honor to reflect on our mission and the meaningful work we've undertaken this year. Together, we are committed to inspiring the architectural profession by fostering innovation, inclusiveness, and professional development while amplifying the voice of associates across the Institute.

    Empowering Diverse Voices

The NAC represents a diverse and dynamic group of professionals, including students, recent graduates, those pursuing licensure, non-licensed professionals in alternative career tracks, and seasoned individuals contributing to the field in non-traditional ways. Our shared goal is to ensure that every associate finds their voice and has a seat at the table within the AIA community.

    Tackling the Challenges Ahead

This year, we focused on addressing pressing issues that impact associates nationwide. From advocating for non-licensed professionals facing titling challenges to improving access to NAAB-accredited degrees in underrepresented states, we are working to create equitable solutions for all. Key areas of concern also include:

    • Reducing barriers to licensure by addressing the cost and accessibility of the ARE (Architect Registration Examination).
    • Promoting alternative career paths, such as academia, sustainability consulting, and BIM management, while advocating for pay equity across all roles.
    • Strengthening mentorship programs and resources for associates.
    • Increasing awareness of the value architects bring beyond traditional design tasks, including their leadership in sustainability, data-driven design, and community engagement.

    Driving Advocacy and Collaboration

Advocacy remains at the heart of our work. From expanding scholarships for licensure exams to empowering associates to engage in local and state board positions, we are equipping our members with the tools and knowledge to lead and advocate for meaningful change. This includes tackling gender and minority pay gaps and advocating for enhanced benefits like parental leave and expanded PTO policies.

We're also fostering strategic partnerships, both within and beyond the AIA. This year, we're revisiting the Associate Awards process to ensure accessibility and equity. Our presence at AIA National Conferences will continue to amplify our mission, and we are enriching the NAC Knowledge Network with updated resources to support our community.

    A Commitment to Sustainability

Climate action is a cornerstone of our focus for 2025 and beyond. By leveraging the AIA's Framework for Design Excellence and collaborating with sustainability-focused groups, we aim to lead the charge in promoting environmentally responsible design. Our efforts are also aligned with the AIA's 2026-2030 Strategic Plan, ensuring sustainability remains central to the profession's future.

    Looking Ahead

As we move forward, the NAC is committed to fostering innovation, empowering the next generation of leaders, and strengthening our community through collaboration and inclusiveness. I invite all associates to take part in this journey-whether through mentorship, advocacy, or active participation in NAC initiatives. Together, we are shaping the future of architecture.

Thank you for your continued engagement and passion. Let's make 2025 a year of meaningful progress and lasting impact.

    Let's Thrive in 2025!

    In solidarity,
    Darral Tate Jr.
Chair, 2025 AIA National Associates Committee
