2025 John P. Eberhard Student Design Competition

Building on the success of the inaugural John P. Eberhard Student Design Competition, In the spring of 2025, ANFA, the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture will again host a design competition with the goal of creating greater interest and understanding of the relationship between neuroscience and architecture.

    Eligible Applicants

    • Undergraduate or Graduate students currently enrolled in a college or university Architecture program, Interior Design program, or Neuroscience program.
    • Students from Extension Programs associated with Architecture, Interior Design, or Neuroscience programs.

    Framework

This competition centers on integrating neuroscience research into the architectural design of spaces that foster early childhood development. Drawing on insights from leading neuroscientists, particularly the work of Karen Dobkins, the competition provides a framework for exploring how scientific research can guide the creation of nurturing and stimulating environments for young children.

While the field of neuroscience and architecture extends beyond any single researcher's contributions, Dobkins' findings on sensory, cognitive, and emotional development in early childhood will serve as an essential foundation. Participants are encouraged to use this framework as a springboard for discussions on how built environments can support healthy brain development, resilience, and social skills in early childhood, considering both established neuroscience principles and innovative applications.

This competition invites entrants to translate these research-based insights into tangible design strategies that emphasize sensory engagement, spatial exploration, and emotional security, shaping a unique environment tailored to the needs of young children.
