We hope you can join us on Thursday, June 8th at 12:30pm for Academy & Practice Table Top Discussion in the Moscone Expo Hall. Here are some other sessions that might be of interest--apologies for any that I missed.
Wednesday, June 7
The Latrobe Prize: Addressing a Multibillion-Dollar Challenge | 10-11:30am | WE207 | Moscone S. room 208
https://conferenceonarchitecture.com/schedule/#poster-2294592
In 2019, the AIA College of Fellows redefined the goal of the biennial $100,000 Latrobe Prize "to explore positive outcomes for people, communities, and the planet resulting from architectural design excellence." The first study to be awarded the prize following this change seeks to strengthen our understanding of how the built environment impacts learning. Working with two large, urban school districts, the research team assessed indoor environmental quality, educational adequacy, and community connectivity in modernized and non-modernized schools. Join this session to learn how this study has begun to realize the College of Fellows' ongoing vision for the Latrobe Prize.
Carbon Crash Course/Charrette | 1-3:30pm | WE303 | Moscone S. room 154
https://conferenceonarchitecture.com/schedule/#poster-2294634
This session is for climate-conscious architects who learn by doing! The rhythm of the workshop will alternate between real case study presentations that highlight open-source carbon accounting tools in use at speakers' firms and breakout group opportunities to apply the same open-source tools in real time, with guidance from speakers. All are welcome-we will level set and cover foundational whole-lifecycle carbon concepts as well as available data sources and tools in the United States, such as EPIC, EC3, NREL Cambium, and eGRID.
Thursday, June 8
Academy and Practice Table Top Discussion | 12:30-1:30pm | Moscone Expo Hall
https://conferenceonarchitecture.com/schedule/#poster-2433648
All are welcome to join AIAS leadership and AIA Higher Education Advisory Team members for an opportunity to create connections and compare notes on how students, faculty, and practice can best support a thriving profession. Topics like mentorship, research, recruiting, and internships will be "on the table".
Integrating Climate Research Into Design Practice | 2-3:30pm | TH117 | Moscone S. room 211
https://conferenceonarchitecture.com/schedule/#poster-2294591
This session will offer a deep dive into the current state of practice-based research, with an explicit focus on firms and practitioners who are successfully developing applied climate action tools and strategies for the built environment. Presenters will focus on how to build tools, develop insights, and expand disciplinary knowledge from a cross section of small, medium, and large design firms. Equal parts information and inspiration, this session will show attendees how in-house research initiatives can be integrated into design practice to advance robust climate action and provide competitive service offerings.
Research by Design: Paths to In-House Architectural Inquiry | 2-3:30pm | TH110 | Moscone S. room 153
https://conferenceonarchitecture.com/schedule/#poster-2294680
This session will share a year-long internal research effort at a firm to address urgent challenges of climate, health, and equity, with a focus on development of innovative new models for high-performance, community-engaged research facilities. Presenters will discuss this process, which started with recruiting and hiring a research intern, followed by conducting interviews and focus groups with academic and business leaders, and finally, coordinating multiple research projects and developing measurable impact metrics.
Do's & Don'ts of Data Standards | 4-5pm | TH223 | Moscone S. room 156
https://conferenceonarchitecture.com/schedule/#poster-2385087
Large organizations have competing interests for the capture, use, and transfer of data. Without properly defined requirements, AEC teams are left to interpret the owner's intent, resulting in information that is not fit for purpose. At project turnover, an owner will be unable to use the output provided to successfully integrate their existing systems and processes to operate their buildings and manage assets. This session will focus on how to guide your client in developing data standards that allow the design team to provide what is necessary for them to successfully run their buildings as well as their business.
Friday, June 9
AIA Research Panelists Meetup | 10-11am | EV302 | AIA Booth 1535
https://conferenceonarchitecture.com/schedule/#poster-2332315
Maybe you're one of the panelists who help make the Architecture Billings Index the leading economic indicator that accurately predicts nonresidential construction activity-or perhaps you've been part of the effort that has made the Home Design Trends Survey a recognized resource for trends in the home construction industry. Whether you're one of AIA's esteemed research panelists or curious about the path to becoming one, this meetup offers you the chance to enjoy refreshments and a robust exchange of ideas.
