The Preservation Posse at Schmidt Associates is a small, dedicated team of researchers focused on industry and competitive analysis within historic preservation practice. We collaborate with professionals across the field to identify trends and assess their impacts on historic preservation. Our findings are shared with the AEC community to foster a spirit of friendly competition.
As we enter our second year of research, we are excited to take our findings on the road to conventions and refine our workshops on industry innovation. We invite AIA members who share our passion to participate in our census of historic preservation practitioners. We hope by better understanding the demographics of practitioners we can help readers of our analysis better see themselves in our case studies and summary reports.
Please take 10 minutes to complete the survey: https://forms.office.com/r/FZ7UiJUMwf
Looking forward to a productive 2025!

Thanks for the feedback, friends. Please enjoy these thoughtful reflections and forward our survey to a practitioner whose voice and talent you value.

📌 "Preservation isn't just about saving old buildings-it's about making them valuable again."

📌 "We need more hands on deck, but expertise matters more than headcount."

📌 "Technology is reshaping preservation, but some of our best tools have been around for decades."

📌 "Preservation needs better funding models-or it risks becoming a luxury practice."

    📌 "Your historic project isn't just an expense-it's a long-term asset."

📌 "Historic preservation is at risk of becoming a niche industry if we don't make it more accessible."

📌 "If we want preservation to thrive, we need to meet the market where it is."

Call me cynical, but this looks like market research that could end up negatively impacting the people who respond to the census.

Where is the part about the ecological taxes that need to exist on demolition projects based on embodied energy and solid waste?
