Design on the Edge: Nature and Technology in Northwest Residential Design
September 18-22, 2024 | Seattle, WA
25 LUs anticipated | HSW TBD
Welcome to the frontier. Design in the Pacific Northwest (NW) is shaped by the convergence of the high-tech and the natural. Its economy and clientele are powered by tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft and there is a start- up spirit that inspires the design community to push the envelope. At the same time, living amid the region's mountains, forests and waters has honed its sensitivity to site and sustainability. Since at least the middle of last century, architects in the northwest have sought ways to connect with the environment through form, space, and materiality. Today, leading practitioners are testing more sustainable construction materials like mass timber and cross-laminated timber (CLT's), exploring new design tools, and experimenting with innovative zoning.
