I have been asked by a client to provide very limited services for a office remodeling. AutoCAD seems overkill for such a small project and am considering using Sketchup with layout. Have others found this to be an optimal use of a different platform for smaller projects?

Use whichever tool will get the job done correctly in the least amount of time. Pencil and Paper? If all your standards are in ACAD, do that! Why fast? To be profitable. I would have to agree with Mr. Larry Fredlund. Use whatever software medium in which you can complete the job quickly and efficiently.

That being said, using Sketchup with Layout will obviously allow your presentation to the client to be much more interactive than ACAD would. Keep in mind that any potentially unnecessary modeling done for a 3-dimensional presentation will drive your fee up (depending on how your fee is structured) and your profit down. If the client is interested in a 3-dimensional representation of the space, use Sketchup and go for it. If not, use whatever can allow you to be efficient in an effort to maximize your profit! Good luck.

I have done so and it has been both successful and fun.  The clients have especially liked the "real-time" way we could sit together and explore options in 3D. The small-scale contractors were comfortable with it, too.  Getting the printed output to look the way I wanted was a bit of a challenge at first, but that got better with time and experience.

I find pencil on velum most efficient for small project C.D.s.
