I have followed this since Mr. Lawrence's first post on March 17. He queried
"What are my limits in starting a out source business, which would focus on construction document markup correction (redlines), quality control as in construction document call out review. I know there is language that I can not use.. Can someone tell me what is my maximum limit in this area. I am 2 years in IDP. It has been difficult in finding work. I would like to maintain my learning experience...I do not want to jeopardize my future license in making mistakes.....Any advice would help".
If he is still in IDP I was confused as to his knowledge to 'correct' drawings via mark-ups, because a knowledgeable person would be needed to put the redlines on the page for him to revise in CADD. Was he planning to sub work from the licensed person? Or do this for another unlicensed person providing architectural services?
Either way the direct supervision of a FL licensed architect is required under FL.Sta.481 as noted in prior posts. I see from the education experience that Mr. Lawrence has posted in his AIA Profile that he has degrees from SUNY Farmingdale and Savannah College of Art. I do not know if these programs will be sufficient for him to qualify for the NCARB exam as they may not be professional degrees.
I suggest he consider work in a state where an architectural license is not required to prepare drawings for residences, as I understand there are several. Years ago FL was one of them, but after Hurricane Andrew, and the adoption of the statewide FBC in 2002, that exemption was eliminated.
If the current FL Legislature is successful in deregulating Interior Designers from licensing requirements, he MAY be able to offer those services with his current credentials.
I recommend he ride out this current economic slump working legitimately, as this will turn around, or find other sources of income so he is not subjected to an inquiry from the DBPR.
