    How have your documents changed? Are you modeling things just because we can?

    How are you using your building information model to provide better documents or are we producing the same documents with a different tool?

    Is your model being used by the design AND construction team or is it cut off at the critical transition point?

    I work for a design/build/develop firm. We are modeling things because we can, and because it helps us to undertand the impications of what we do in 3 dimensions. We are also using Navisworks to help coordinate MEPFP subcontractor/design models. These models and visual images are available to our jobsite field personnel and subcontractor trades so they can see how the various systems are to be routed. The architectural and structural disciplines are both working realtime in the model. 

    So in reponse to your first question, i would say that our processes have changed more than our documents. We also have begun using the model as basis for energy modeling, construction sequencing and estimating- although these uses are really still in the development stage and are really used as a form of backup support.

    I am a specifying consultant. In our office, we are promoting the use of Preliminary Project Descriptions or PPDs with links to BIMs embedded in the document. BIMs use UniFormat assembly codes to categorize objects in the model. We think PPDs are the smart choice for document format in the early, conceptual phases of a project, including Design Development. The organization of the document makes estimating easier and the results more accurate. Owners like the format because of its comprehensive yet succinct content.

    We also foresee the use of this type of document by Facility Managers and Owners to develop operating plans for their facilities.

    The format is slowly gaining acceptance but the jury is still out on it. Does anyone else out there have experience preparing PPDs?

    We recently used the PPD Format for the bridge document for a design build project. We did not take advantage of the BIM Uniformat Assembly Code other than  to organize the assemblies on the drawings and  to coordinate  the PPD (Spec)

    What would have been helpfull in doing the work where Master PPD's  , like masterspecs. Buiding and formating from scratch takes time.  Does any organazation produce a master for editing.


    I see the usefullness at the conceptual , SD, DD phase.
