I've always told my residential clients that we want to bring consciousness to the sub-conscious messages we are sending to ourselves and our family and guests, when we make design decisions about our homes. I tell them that what they place at the center of their design represents what lies at the center of their lives. What occupies our focus in a home or room represents what occupies our inner focus in the realm of the tasks associated to that space. I ask them to really consider this and to choose carefully. Will it be the TV (information)? The hearth (warmth and alchemy)? The Library (knowledge)? The Study (home office)? Gathering around the preparation of food (kitchen)? Art (the studio)? This often causes them great concern, and it should. With 200 completed residential projects, I have come to feel the weight of my responsibility to ask the tough questions. For most residential clients, no other professional during their lifetime has or will been tasked with converting dreams into form and space. No other professional has or will be been tasked with assisting them in converting the largest amount of their personal fortune into tangible goods. I recognize this and I use the weight of this responsibility to ask the tough questions.
