CRAN Symposium in Santa Fe

  • 1.  CRAN Symposium in Santa Fe

Wow. I got back late last night from the CRAN Symposium in Santa Fe, and despite having acquired a nasty virus while I was there, I am feeling inspired! The speakers were awesome, the tour of local homes was amazing, and the sponsors showed off some really cool products! The best part was getting to meet residential practitioners from all over the country, and to reconnect with old friends. Although I missed the couple getting engaged in the product showcase, I had some nice dinners with other attendees and picked up some ideas about design and practice that I will implement right away. If you came to the symposium, what was your favorite moment? By the way, mark your calendar now. The 2014 symposium will be even bigger and better than this one, and it will take place in Charleston, SC, from Thursday, September 18, through Sunday, September 21. ------------------------------------------- Dawn Zuber AIA Owner Studio Z Architecture Canton MI -------------------------------------------

    Dawn -

I agree.  The symposium was thoroughly exhausting and totally worth it.  The venue, people, programs, house tour, etc. were all amazing.  And Bobby McAlpine was truly inspirational (and really funny).  He practices the way so many of us would like to.

    Can't wait for Charleston 2014.

Wow this was my 4th CRAN Symposium and the best one yet! The two standouts for me were John Dick and Bobby McAlpine! Absolute superstars in my book! Each year these three days inspire me for an entire year! Someone came up and said thank you for my service on the AG! That was very nice! John Isch this year's chairperson and the rest of the AG did a wonderful job! Glad to call you my friends! Can't wait for next year in Charleston! Until then my Amigos, keep practicing Architecture. Someday we'll know it all!

From what I am hearing, most everyone was mesmerized by Bobby McAlpine's talk, as well as John Dick, James Cutler and a few others.  Here is a thought.  What would the ramifications be of video taping some of the events?  It would not require a "professional" quality production but it appears to me that CRAN could make a little extra income (used for future symposiums?) by selling copies for a nominal fee.  I for one would enjoy and better absorb the philosophy and insight from the speakers.

We did consider video taping the sessions, but due to the rather high costs associated with a live recording, I instead recorded the presentations and audio in real time. The recorded presentations, when edited and synced with the audio, will be made available to all CRAN members in the future. In the mean time, I will be uploading the presentations and handouts into the CRAN resource library and will send an email when they are available.

    Thanks!

I strongly supported the idea of taping these from the beginning.  That said, Ann points out one big problem, it's VERY expensive to do it well and we would have to probably charge per view to make up the cost..urgh!

Further, many of the comments that were made in such honesty, cander, and humor, would be self-screened by the speakers with the fear that they would taken out of context. Anyone that was there will know what I was talking about.

That said, we are open to any and all recommendations.

This was the best CRAN event so far... next dance, in Charleston SC next Sept 17-21!

Thank you Ann for recording the sessions. I'm currently working from a friend/client's dining room table in Mill Valley and find myself sitting here late into the evening well after the bottles of wine have been emptied. As usual, the wonderful euphoria of the CRAN symposium is quickly suppressed by the every day needs of caring for my dear clients. To be able to listen to even 10 minutes of Bobby's presentation would offer a good laugh and would remind me of why I love being an architect.

I agree.  I was not able to attend, and would like to see what is going on at these get-togethers before committing the resources to attend.

I caught the tale end of Bobby speaking many years ago in Charlotte at a design symposium. His presentation had the audience in tears of emotion. I am sorry I missed this one.
Bobby is the total package, writes well, speaks well, draws and designs well. We could all benifit from watching him bring a very large group of poeple to tears. I do not know if architecture can move one to tears. budgets aside. But speaking about it can. Ideas are powerful when presented by a master..

Love the idea of a video. How about TED talk.

Rather than reiterate what Dawn said, I absolutely couldn't agree more.  The AG (the "Amazing Group") did it again and Santa Fe is a fantastic city full of culture, art and magnificent architecture.  I had the opportunity to stay one extra day and enjoyed just roaming the streets with my camera and of course a few bottles of water to stay hydrated.  Each Symposium keeps outdoing the last and I can't wait for Charleston, SC!

    OK,

Once again, my expectations were exceeded with the 6th Annual CRAN Symposium in Santa Fe, NM over the long weekend. The caliber and breath of the speakers really defies explanation as we heard philosophies, strategies, stories and career-building opportunities from so many distinct spectrums. I am overloaded and frankly thinking - what do I do next!

I feel the AIA Santa Fe team led by Allan Baer deserve an enormous round of applause for their deft organizational commitment and efforts towards making the home tour a fabulous success! Thank you Allan and Santa Fe AIA!

The sponsors deserve a big thank you as they gave us the opportunity to stretch and raise the bar even further with their generosity and support for the CRAN Knowledge Community. We look forward to seeing you all again in Charleston!

Having the Opening Gala in the Georgia O'Keefe museum...wow, what a great venue and a backdrop to set the tone for high culture, art and architecture to follow!

Now, how about our AIA National support team of Bruce, Ann & Sharia? They did all the heavy lifting and did so looking as if it was easy! They simply ROCK!

CRAN Advisory Group members...you know who you are! You all make it worthwhile, you all make it count and you all support the right path for our profession without reservation and with the highest degree of commitment. Thank you!

Finally, I must give a very big warm thank you to all the attendees as they are CRAN family. Their collective support, attitude and fellowship towards custom residential design is the glue that keeps pushing the train down the track!

Thanks to all - see you in Charleston!

    Be there or be square!

Dawn, sorry to hear about the virus. Sounds like several people experienced that. It must have been all that clean fresh air that did it. Thanks for your comments on Symposium, I always learn something to take away and enjoy seeing friends I have come to meet over the years. Sponsors were also gracious with their comments and time. Speakers and tour were great and we are already starting to plan Symposium for 2014! Look forward to seeing you and many others there.

    Thanks,

    John
