This message has been cross posted to the following Discussion Forums: Housing Knowledge Community and Custom Residential Architects Network .
    -------------------------------------------

I am spearheading a project with Doug Patt of "How to Architect" to build videos at CRAN that would introduce our clients on the importance of hiring an architect. The thought is that we could have links to these video on our websites, or send clients to the videos through a sent link. Here is our pilot video that I presented to rave reviews in Denver. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kuiMxaR9N0 We hope to use this video to acquire funding to complete the first season, below:

    1. The Architect's Office
    2. The Architect's Drawings and Specifications (or construction documents)
    3. The Architect's Insurance
    4. The Architect's Contract
    5. The Architect's Basic Services
    6. The Architect's Additional Services
    7. The Architect's Compensation (John Isch has been after me to make this video)
    8. The Architect's Employees
    9. The Architect's Process
    10. What is Green beyond the gimmicks?
    11. Why quality per square foot should be the datum upon which you begin your program.
    12. Contextual Sustainability for sake of resale and supporting local labor
This what AIA/CRAN is doing, creating content and support for residential architects, something missing for decades.

It was brought up both at the forum in Denver, and though these posts, that Doug and I did a pretty poor job with the gender neutrality in the wording of the script. I plead guilty 100%, and that will be addressed in all future videos.  We may try and update this video when we get funding with that change, and some others.

Thanks to everyone that reached out with the polite constructive criticisms. This is a learning process for us!

"Contextual Sustainability" sounds like a fancy name for style bias.

No, it is is bias towards "Contextual Sustainability"

All archetypes welcome.... sculpture filled with program irrespective of vernacular need not apply.

The please, explain to me what this mean? Contextual Sustainability for sake of resale and supporting local labor.

Its not obvious, and it sounds like you will be advocating for building in a mode sympathetic to existing structures. And that you will evidence that is beneficial in some way through higher resale values, and by providing local jobs?

Perhaps I am reading that totally wrong, and I hope I am because it sounds preposterous.

But you've obviously thought about it enough to include it on the list. Do you have an outline started? Are you willing to share it here?

    HI Greg,

You are reading it wrong, our ideology is not preposterous. But in truth, we AIA/CRAN, believe what we believe. Check out the introduction and criteria ("Guiding Principles for the Collection ") for our new book. http://www.aia.org/practicing/groups/kc/AIAB098218

As I have mentioned before, egotistic self granding sculpture filled with program irrespective of vernacular need not apply. Our criteria is very clear, and is inclusive to ALL archetypes that recognize their local vernacular.  I can tell you with assurity because I know the houses that have been chosen by us for the book so far. They range from historic shingle style to very very modern, most semi modern in the middle, but all relate to the context in some way.  You will have to wait until it is published to beleive me.

We are waiting for underwriting before we work on any further scripts or videos. The titles are tentative.

    Dave

David, this statement Is a contradiction:

"Underlying our selection of projects will be the principle of contextual sustainability, influenced by a style neutral code"

Unless you are going to look at "style" in the most superficial manner, you are stating that you have a policy against design that deliberately contrasts with context rather than "relate" as you put it. How is that not style bias?

You may want to rationalize it, but this is nothing more than style bias in the most flagrant form, and now apparently institutionalized in the AIA. This is your brand of inclusiveness? This:

"egotistic self granding sculpture filled with program irrespective of vernacular need not apply"

I hope the contradiction in your own words does not escape you. And I suppose that the image of the mansion in the video - that does not strike you as self granding sculpture?

I've asked you to explain this "principle of contextual sustainability" - please do so. Since it seems that it has become AIA Policy don't you think you ought to be transparent about it?

Am I really the only person here that takes exception to this?

Kudos on this Dave - well done.  It tells a great story about some core differences that distinguish Architects from the many others who are active in the residential design world!

The only thought I had that might make this even better: see if there is a way to hone the message to 100 seconds as that is a number that is not very intimidating to potential viewers.

    Cheers
    Mike
