  • 1.  Housing after Sandy

Many of you may have seen this article or one similar to it. When the discussion of emergency housing pops up, it rarely is in the context of a major urban environment where space is at such a premium. I know there are architects trained for emergency situations such as this one and are currently on the scene, but how can we quickly get shelters for those who are homeless overnight? If you had to be homeless for 6 weeks, what would you build for yourself? This is a discussion for CRAN but could easily be for any knowledge community.

Here's a quote I like from this article:

"It's unclear what plans the city, state and federal government had before the storm to deal with a housing crisis of this magnitude. But in 2007, the city Office of Emergency Management held a design competition for post-disaster housing if a Category 3 hurricane smashed the city and left hundreds of thousands homeless.

The winning ideas included building a six-story complex mounted on ship hulls; using debris to create provisional housing; and turning shipping containers into living quarters."
